Well, I'm sorta suprised. In Poland you pay rather for a finished piece not a time that an artist spent making it. Also, prices are muuuuuuch lower. I'll pay about $50 for the big, detailed cover-up on my back (the covered tattoo isn't actually big, but the new piece will be) - but mostly because artists are my friends.
On the other hand, I know a guy who paid about $250 for a shitty tattoo made by some artist (or 'artist';) in his flat, while drinking beer.

'Figuratively speaking, the human body is a canvas... it's just permanently stretched around a living being.'

I know - but the last part is an important one.

Wow. It almost seems kind of shameful to pay an experienced artist so little for so much work. I just hope you tip them well, especially if they're your friends as you say.

Not that I'm "all about the money..." quite the opposite, really... but even artists need to eat.

Well, they have enough clients (sometimes even too many of them) to make 'a gift' for someone from time to time. Actually, I wanted to pay a full price but they told me I don't have to.

I wasn't talking about you specifically. I sort of assumed that you were getting a deal around half-off (which would mean an entire backpiece would cost a measly $100) but in the US, artists usually make pretty good money. My rate is nearly the lowest in town, and good artists with a few years experience make around $150-250 an hour. Kat Von D makes $500 per hour, which is just fucking insane.

So, depending on how long your tattoo takes (most large backpieces can take upwards of 20 hours) the same tattoo done here could set someone back thousands.

Well, no. $50 is just the lowest price in their shop (also, this tattoo won't cover my entire back).
I don't know if any shop in Poland has such high prices but even compared to other artists in my city they're moderately cheap - what is kinda paradoxical when you know people from the UK or Germany come here only to get a tattoo made by them.
